Meet — TrillaKay
Where did you grow up? What were your adolescent years like?
I grew up in NE, DC (18th & Monroe if you’re familiar) and lived there all my life until I went to college. My adolescent years consisted of late nights at practice (I was always in choir or playing a sport) or hanging out with my friends from the neighborhood or school. I started working pretty early (like around 15 y/o) because I always had a spirit of independence and wanted to have money for nails and shoes (you know, high school drip) so in high school i’d either be working, recording cover songs with the homies or bussin moves on the metro after school to museums, chipotle or wherever we could get into as high schoolers.
How did your relationship with music come about?
My relationship with music has been present since my first memories. One of my very first childhood gifts I remember receiving was a little keyboard with a mic. My mom would always take me to church so I joined the choir and loved to sing. I’d sing in the church choir, school choir, with my friends, by myself. But I never imagined having a career in music until my college years.
Building a relationship with your creativity is not a quick feat; sometimes, it takes experience and understanding to feel comfortable with who you are as a creative. What has your journey been thus far? What do you incorporate into your daily life that allows you to maintain this relationship with your creative self?
Building a relationship with my creative self honestly didn’t come about until I started cultivating spirituality and healing into my life and daily habits. I had that dark night of the soul period where I had to lose myself to find my true self. Through the discovery of my truest self, my creativity has allowed me to peel back layers that further cultivate healing, self reflection and a deeper love for all. I incorporate movement, a plant based diet, and self reflection into my daily life to continue to cultivate and maintain a healthy balance with my creative self.
Do you have any habits or systems that help you get into your creative moods?
My diet and exercise are top 2 contributors to my creativity. Some notable faves are yoga, matcha lattes, journaling and spending time in nature. If I want to manifest something, I WRITE IT DOWN. Other than that, I just go with the flow.
If you could recommend 3 products//brands//places to someone what would they be?
What are you working on? Any exciting projects coming out that we should put on our radar?
I’ll be dropping a music video to my song God Body this year. I’ll also be traveling quite a bit this year. SXSW in Austin, TX, Hangout Fest in Alabama, then a 10 city tour with Tre Amani and Big KRIT in May-June.
